Medigap Plan G cost

Plan G covers everything Original Medicare leaves you to pay except the Part B deductible. Every insurer's Plan G covers the same things, but prices differ a lot by insurer, state, age and how the insurer sets its rates. Always compare.

What Plan G covers

  • Part A hospital coinsurance and hospital costs for 365 extra days after Medicare runs out
  • The Part A deductible
  • Part B coinsurance (usually 20%)
  • Part B excess charges, when a doctor charges more than Medicare's approved amount
  • Skilled nursing coinsurance, hospice coinsurance, the first 3 pints of blood
  • 80% of emergency care abroad after a $250 yearly deductible, up to plan limits

Not covered: the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), long-term care (non-skilled nursing home care), prescription drugs (join a Part D plan), dental, vision and hearing aids.

How insurers set the price

Pricing methodHow it worksOver time
Community-rated (no age rating)Same premium for everyone, whatever your ageCan rise with inflation, not with your age
Issue-age-ratedBased on your age when you buyDoesn't go up because you get older
Attained-age-ratedBased on your current ageGoes up as you age; may be cheapest at first but can become the most expensive

Not every state allows all three. Premiums can also rise for inflation under any method. Ask each insurer which method it uses: a low price at 65 can become a high one later.

High-deductible Plan G

Some states offer a high-deductible Plan G. You pay Medicare-covered costs, including the Part B deductible, up to a yearly deductible of $3,050 in 2027 ($2,950 in 2026); then the plan pays the rest of Medicare's cost-sharing for the year. Premiums are usually lower. It's open to people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.

What is high-deductible Plan G?

A version of Plan G with a yearly deductible of $3,050 in 2027 ($2,950 in 2026) before the plan pays. Premiums are usually lower. It's available in some states to people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.
